A long time ago a user was added to AD on our server and has seemed to have disappeared.
I need to change the network password for this person so I went onto the server to change it and noticed that the user isn't in the list. So I tried to reinstate the user under AD, and it gave me an error stating that the user is already there.

From Active Directory User's and Computers, right click on the domain and do an advanced find. If you still can't find the user, it could be possible that you don't have rights to a particular OU or one that is hidden.
If you find one where you see it in the right panel and not in the left, chances are you don't have rights. Turn on advanced features and add yourself.

Exactly. You can search text in any field located in the User Profile.
The user can change his/her own password though, just by doing Ctrl-Alt-Del and Selecting Change Password.
