I have a new exchange server and an old one. My new exchange server is named: serverwebexdata and my old exchange server is named: exchange01. Now, I tranfered all my mailboxes to the new one and all my clients can access them. I turn off my old exchange server and my clients can access the mailboxes. I can totally remove exchange01 and Microsoft Exchange Server can function off serverwebexdata. Now, in the Exchange System Manager, there are 2 servers. Both Servers are displayed and I want to delete the exchange01, but it tells me that that server is active. I cannot even uninstall exchange server from exchange01 and it tells me that it is currantly active. How do I remove exchange01? I tried every single method (i.e. restating my servers, restarting exchange server, etc.) and it still gives me an error message that exchange01 is active. How do I deactivate that particular server? Must I transfer something that is critical for exchange server to function? I mean I can turn off exchange01 and my exchange server works. Is there something that I need to transfer to deactivate exchange01?

Of course, we can't tell which version of Exchange you're talking about, so I'm assuming you have Ex2k3.

Uhm, I Forgot to mention. I am using Exchange Server 2003 Enterprise Edition under Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition. My old Exchange Server is the same version of Exchange Server, the operating system though is Windows 2000 Advanced Server. And No, I tried looking at the Microsoft web site for help but it got me lost and confused LOL. I need someone to help me out here instead.

I just completed migration from an old server to a new one, including Exchange 2003 on Windows 2003, and I followed those steps in the article;

It may seem confusing, but I would suggest reading it again as it does work.
What you might want to do is make sure all but the system mailboxes are either moved to the new server or purged from the old one.
