I am trying to find the best way to backup client workstations from the sevrer. I have seen that some people have the workstations programmed to backup as soon as the computer logs off. I was wondering if that was set up on the server or was it set up on the clients work station or was it just a third party software. If it was a third party software what would it be an what is the best way to go about backing up workstations to a remote computer. it is a small network of 10 computers. Thanks

Why not have a file server for everyone and just back that up?

Thats one thing that we do but I know that if someone has a file open the backup will not finish backing up the whole location. Plus some people take laptops home with them and the information must be on the laptop.

Thanks

enable shadow copy on the drive that the shared files are on so that if the file is open it will backup the shadowcopied version instead.

as for having laptops. dpending on what information your talkin about there are a number of ways to go about it. enabling offline files and disabling the deletion of cached roaming profiles is generally a good combo for roaming laptops

Good call, Matty.

One correction, NTBackup doesn't require you actually enable VSS on the drive. By default, it uses Shadow Copies to backup open files even if you're not using VSS.

that you all for your help. one thing though. You are talking about enablling vss on the drive. I didn't quite understand that. I know that shadow copy is automatically enabled but for some reason its didn't work last time I tried but I will try that again. Also I was thinking if there is a way to set up all computers to perform a backup without configuring each workstation at the station like setting up a group policy. Maybe I will just set up a batch file the only thing is the computer name has to be the variable. Also does anyone know how to set the workstation to backup when the person logs off. I know roaming profiles do this but I was wondering if there is another way.

You can always use Dantz Retrospect (third-party) This will allow the server to backup data from all its client machines...say...around lunchtime....incremental backups shouldn't take too long.
