I've heard that using the WinXP drivers will work well.

I've got to ask something here though. I'm not trying to be too rude, but Win2003 is high end server software.

Retail it runs around $650.00. Why would anyone spend that kind of money to run a computer on which they are going to play games?

Surely there are better OSes for that.

Just curious.

Server os or not it is the best thing Microsoft has ever released. Sure it's not "made" for games but that doesn't mean it's not great at it. I get better framerates on WinS2k3 than Win98 or WinXp.

As far as the price issue goes, some folks spend $400-500 on a videocard. Hell that thing will have to be replaced in a couple of years and people still pay it LOL.

Just my two cents,
Sandman

I agree and I just installed this operating system. XP had so many problems with games I was anxious to try something else.

The first thing I put in was my favorite game.

And wow it runs great! Best it ever did. I decided to dual boot in case I wanted to keep games on the xp and until I learn this os better.

I think if you go to ATI site there must be an updated panel to download.

And one thing I just found out you must have your chipset drivers in for the agp acceleration to work.

Here's how to fix it.

First, d/l the latest XP drivers. Instal them.

Upon reboot, hit F8, and boot into VGA safe mode.

Once in windows, go to display properties, settings, advanced, troubleshooting, and drag your acceleration level all the way up. If it is all the way up already, drag it all the way down., click apply, then all the way up, and click apply. Also enable write combining.

Reboot once again, hit F8, then boot normally, and you're golden.

As for the "no games on a server" morons, 2003 is the fastest, most stable OS MS has out right now. Sure, it requires that you now what you're doing to get it to wok the way you want, but if you don;t mind actually learning how to do it, it;s a much better option than XP.

Emkorial,

I'd spend a lot more time in these forums before I started calling someone a moron if I were you.

Thanks for that post Emkorial! I'll go try that out now, I was afraid I'd have to go back to 2k if I couldn't get games working.

By the way, even gamers need a stable OS. I'm currently evalutating Win2k3 to see if it will be appropriate for the gaming computer I am building, this computer will have no server functions but it will need to be 100% stable. So my only other option is Windows 2000 and I really appreciate the pretty freatures in XP/ 2k3. If I'm gonna blow so much money on a high end system the OS better at least look nice.

its my opinion too. i need a stable system to play games. and a other thing why i will use win2k3 server: i have a p4 with HT and HT is only full supported in win2k3 or winXP (i don't like winXP). currently i use win2k (on win2k HT break out the system) to play games. now i hope my ati will work on win2k3. cu

djELITE please stop reading docs, and start trying things.
seawatch quit trolling.

Emkorial is right, but you don't have to reboot into VGA mode (or at least, I never have had to). Just bump up the slider, reboot, and the ATI control panel should load.
It seems the Video In software is written in such a way that it won't load though, so beware you All-In-Wonder and VIVO users. (Of course, the latest (8.6) version of MMC doesn't load in WinXP either, so who cares...)

All-in-all, Win2k3 can do everything WinXP can do, only better (except themes, wooptie). If you believe different, prove it.

I am not nor was I trolling.

That clown thinks he can make his point by calling me a moron and he's not going to get away with it.

I've been in these forums for a long time and give fairly good advice.

If he thinks because I disagree with him that I'M a moron then he shouldn't be in these forums because many of us disagree from time. to time but have the courtesy to be civili about.
