My windows server machine has been working great but when i tried getting on it the other day and for some reason my administrator account doesn't work correctly.

It is like it is freezing and running slow but it's not.

When it logs in i can move the mouse and click things on desktop and quick launch as normal but when i click the start button i move the cursor to say programs or control panel and the highlight doesn't move with the mouse and it also freezing when u try click on something in the start menu.

It also hangs on right click..

The only non windows process running is the virus protection. (Symantec Antivirus Sever)

is their a way to fix this annoying problem..

i tried my account and that seems to be fine...

Are you loggin on locally or remotely?

Have you tried checking the running processes? You might have something taking up all of your memory/ram.

speaking of, how much ram do you have in that thing and how much can it hold?

I would run AdAware by lavasoft. Sounds like you might have some spyware or something. If you have something like norton on there then you might want to remove it and add something less consuming like AVG (by grisoft).

Check your processes in the task manager too, see what is consuming the most memory, odds are it will be part of the problem.

Let me know how this works.

Done the ad-aware scan and nothing found as thought cause it doesn't have internet access on it anyway.

I have checked the task manager whilst in the administrator account and there is not even much in there that would cause it to not run properly..

The CPU usage was not going over 10% and it seems to work fine with everything except when you click the start bar and try browse through it is when it starts to lag..

This problem can be caused but your start menu its self. If you are using some sort of shared desktop\start menu that has links to software on local machines that are not on the server you are loggin on to then windows will hang whilst it tries to find the Icons for the start menu. to over come this u need to make a new share somewhere that is accessable (preferbly read only to standard users) and then copying over the icon files (sometimes the exe file) to this location then on the links (probably ones with a white box icon) right clicking and going to properties and changing the Icon (not the shortcut) then redirecting it to the new icon share.

This way, even if the program is not installed, windows can still find the icon file.

Hope this helps you.

Tom
