Hi there,
I have dcpromo'd my 2k3 dc into a 2k domain and I was going through a checklist to see if it was correctly added, only to find that in Administrative Tools the DNS tool is missing. My first idea is to dcpromo down my 2k3 dc again recheck all my DNS settings and the run the dcpromo again.
Is it messy to dcpromo the new server so many times? is there anything else I could do to fix this situation?
I have the dns of the 2k3 dc pointing to the ip of the 2k dc. Everything else in my AD on the 2k3 dc looks fine, servers, users, pcs etc...
I'd apreciate a second opinion on how to proceed here?
Thanks!

Hi there,
I have run the Adminpak.msi on the 2k3 cd as suggested by the microsoft article 885956, and the tool has been correctly installed. The only doubt that I have about my AD setup is that:
a) I am still pointing to the 2k dc server for dns, am I supposed to changed this now to point to myself?
b) I am missing the subfolders in the SYSVOL,
c:\windows\SYSVOL\sysvol\mulco.local the folder mulco.local is empty?
I have created the scrips and policies folders but I am not sure if my setup is hole proof???
All suggestions greatly apreciated.
Thanks!

Do you plan to remove or have you removed the W2k Server completely from the network? Is the new server the same name as the old server? Does it have a static IP address? You probably have to reset the DNS on all machines to point to the new server, if it's DHCP and the new server has a different computer name.

Hola Guapo!
In response to your questions:
Do you plan to remove or have you removed the W2k Server completely from the network?
No I have not removed it, it is the main DC at the minute, containing the fsmo roles and with the global catalogue.
Is the new server the same name as the old server?
No it has a new name and a new static IP address. It is an additional DC in an existing domain. I cna't have 2 dc's with the same name.
Does it have a static IP address?
YesThe main thing that I am worried about are the sysvol\sysvol\domain.local subfolders are missing.
Also when I dcpromo'd the 2k3 dc into the 2k domain the dns admin tool was missing.
I am worried that their may be something wrong with my AD setup.
I can't demote the 2k DC to a member server until I know that the setup between the two is 100% ok.I tried to dcpromo the 2k3 back down, to start again from scratch and get error messages, which also isnt a good sign.
Any help apreciated!
Thanks
Róisín

Yes, it sounds like there is a problem with AD but let me direct you to the forum at www.minasi.com
Those guys deal with AD on a daily basis and are experts in migration and replication. You'll get a more accurate answer in less time if you ask your question there or maybe just do a search.
