Did you Google?

If you currently have a Workgroup, then your user accounts are local to their computers. Once the client machines have been added to the newly created Domain, the users will login to the Domain with their newly created Domain Account, which you will have to create DC. Data on the local machines will not be effected unless you wish to move it (and that's recommended so that users can have "Home Folder" and store data on the Server rather than on local machines.

What is handling your DNS/DHCP now?

Life's more painless for the brainless.

When you add a computer to the domain and log in as a domain user, it will create a new profile for that user. Even though it may be the same physical user, it is a new account so a new profile is created.

You can copy the 'old' users profile to the new profile if you choose to.

You can use the Copy To function to mirror the profile. Logon at least once after joining the domain. Then while logged on as another user (with administrative rights) Control Panel|System|Advanced|User Profiles|Settings, select your oldprofile, Copy To, Browse to %systemdrive%\Documents and Settings\newprofile Change "Permitted to use:" to "newprofile" OK.

If this is confusing, do a search on moving your local profile for more help.

go to run and type migwiz.exe. run this while you are logged in locally. copy your profile to your desired location ideally on the root of c under a directory called c:\profile. When you log in to the domain run migwiz.exe again and point the restore to the saved profile you created. This will then restore all your settings as before. Note the USMT (user state migration tool) is built into all XP distro`s. Running migwiz.exe is easier as its GUI based rather than command line.
