I am running Server 2003 Enterprise and until now it has done nothing but log traffic from my firewall above it. I have about 30 Linux servers behind the firewall / router and we learned the hard way what we already knew: if the firewall locked up there would be no way to access it. We even have KVM over Ip and remote APC's -- behind the firewall.

Our co-lo provider is dropping ina phone line for us to backdoor into the Windows box. But I tried for hours to get a Zoom USB modem to install (logged in as the Administrator.) The drivers were for ME/98/2000/XP. No go.

I'd like to install an external U.S. Robotics but am I going to have the same trouble with drivers? Is there a better choice?

What happens when you let it detect it?
Otherwise...
Use one of the "standard" modems when you go to add a modem. No special drivers required.

Example of Oxymoron:
Person who is pro life and anti sex education.
Education is key to prevention. Prevent conception you prevent abortion. Abstinence training clearly isn't working.

The Zoom modem instructions were specific and required that one install the drivers first, power down the PC, plug in the USB device, and then power back on. Once at the login screen a failed driver messages appears. Getting past it and logged in the box did detcted a USB modem and did show it in the System - Hardware tab.

The Event Viewer shos the following driver error but I don't know how to remove the driver error. I have uninstalled the device but still get the error:

The yavwxtaa service failed to start due to the following error:
The specified driver is invalid.

Back to the main point, I was never comfortable with the Zoom but it was all that BestBuy had in a pinch. I have since ordered a U.S. Robotics for the office and now want to order an external U.S. Robotics serial modem for the Windows Server. Then I will have to configure Win Server to allow me to dial in, a topic new to me. I'm a Linux guy.

I have used USR since the 1980's -- I am going to (likley) have better resuots using a better brand?

You were using drivers and docs written for workstation os's. That was the problem.

Have you tried loading the zoom as I described using a standard 56 modem driver?

Google RRAS [routing and remote access server] for how to configure the dial in service.
