I have a serious problem with my server where by sometimes the whole thing slows down. I have tried everything to get it going but nothing seems to work.
I have setup on the server:
+ Active Directory
+ DNS
+ DHCP
+ IISAnyway when trying to solve the problem I noticed the following error when i tried to perform an nslookup on one of the clients. It read:
S:\>nslookup
*** Can't find server name for address 192.168.0.1: Non-existant domain
*** Default servers are not available
Default Server: UnKnown
Address: 192.168.0.1
when i type in the name of the single domain controller "homefs1", the following occurs:>homefs1
Server: UnKnown
Address: 192.168.0.1Name: homefs1.Home.local
Address: 192.168.0.1
Does anyone have any ideas? My users are really starting to get annoyed with me. As am i :P

Is DNS address on network settings pointing toward the internal server, if not make sure this is and then add an entry for external DNS server in the DNS Forwarders tab in DNS setting on the server.

Yea, make sure you have a reverse lookup record, known as a pointer (PTR) record. The error you see is usually caused by not having a PTR record. You can do this - delete the host record for whatever corresponds to that IP address, then recreate it making sure to check the box to 'create associated PTR' and try again.

Thanx for your help glen.
It looks like I am narrowing in on the problem.
When i try to create a new host record i get the following error...
"Warning: The associated pointer (PTR) record cannot be created, probably becuase the referenced reverse lookup zone cannot be found."
wat does this mean. btw i am trying to do this on the single DC i have which also runs DNS, is that a problem?

You need to create a reverse lookup zone. Right click on your server in DNS manager and select 'create new zone' and create a reverse zone.
