Can anyone let me know how much trouble i am getting into by renaming my AD Domain name. we are currently running 2003 standard with AD setup and working properly. we for some reason used our domain name from our web site as our "internal" domain also, so now DNS is now getting tricky with some projects. the domain we want to use is allready registerd and not associated with a website. I have read up on how to chage the AD doamin name, but i am still a little leary bout making the change. we only have about 15 users on this domain.

so i guess my question is are there any problems that i might run into that someone can inform me of.

I have never done it but I can tell you that it is certainly not recommended unless absolutely necessary. Even then, I can almost guarantee you that it will be a major pain.

If you think about what has to happen in a domain rename you can see why. All management tools need to be informed of the new name, DNS has to be reconfigured, all the clients have to be redirected, etc. This is not something to undertake lightly. I doubt you'll find many people that have done this and if you do find someone, I doubt it went well.

Good luck.

I am not going to say that i am suprised. But seeing as how there are only a few workstations using this machine and domain, i might give it a try. The fact that i have not been able to find anyone who has done this kinda worries me, but hey, thats what full system backups are for right.

I have performed a domain rename on a test lab situation, and the only problem I've found so far is some broken group policies that the gpfixup tool didn't fix. As a college with a MS campus agreement, we run mostly MS products and so probably will have less problems than other businesses. I will be performing my DR tomorrow live. I will be using the domain rename tools provided by MS, but I do advise downloading the most current versions as there have been a few issues w/older versions as far as testing went. If you do your research, test it before going live, I don't see why it should be so terrifying. I'll see tomorrow I guess!
