Hello
I am trying to set up active directory at home using win2003 server and win xp clients. I have created a user and added it to the domain administrators group.

When i jump on the client machine, i can log in but if i open my computer and try to share a folder i dont have the share option, going into properties/security everything is disabled. Clicking on the add and do a find now cannot find the server running active directory. But from the server i can see properties of the client.

Any ideas???

thanks in advance

Guy

How did you add the XP Pro workstation to thew domain (what process did you use)? I just want to make sure the account is valid.

Just thru active directory users and computer. I right clicked on the computer node and created a new computer.

I created a user and made me meber of domain administrators.

Win2003 is installed straight out of the box, i have not played with profiles/catalogs, etc as i am not sure at this stage what options to add.

Can't do that....On your xp computer, you need to right-click My Computer, properties, select computer name, and click change. Select domain and enter your domain name, hit OK, and enter your domain admin username and password, restart when prompted, then login. By the way, it wont work if you are running xp home edition.

I tried as you suggested but made no difference. I was wondering are there options in policy setting or security that have to be tweaked to allow clients to access/see the server????

I am running win xp pro sp2

Try right-clicking, choose properties on network places, and right-click, properties on local area connection, make sure that file and printer sharing is installed there, if not, add it.

Also, go into my computer and tools->folder options, click the view page, and scroll to the bottom, uncheck use simple file sharing, then hit OK, restart, and see if it lets you share a folder that way.

I appreciate your effort to help me
I have checked file sharing and it is checked although i get a message that i have insufficient privileges to update any of the properties. This appeared to be a general status across different parts of windows that i could not change anything.

Well anyway i rechecked all my security settings on the server and found that i was not assigned to domain admin group after all. I was certain that i was but who knows.

So the latest status now is that i can right click on a folder in windows explorer and see the sharing tab from properties and can create a share but when i click on the permissions button, i cannot the see my active directory server and therefore cannot access any of the users created. My workstation is the only machine visible in the advanced option
