Subject: 64-bit extended systems differenc? OS: windows 2003 64-bitCPU/Ram: variesModel/Manufacturer: varies |
Comment: Hi What is the difference between regular 64-bit and 64-bit extended systems in Win 2003? I noticed that when perparing to download drivers. Some claim its for Itanium (IA) based chipsets. That can't be true as MS refers to AMD as well. IA had nothing to do AMD as IA was initially a HP & Intel development. Regards Jim

Reply: (edit)I'm not sure I understand your question but I'll clarify the 64-bit confusion. There are two "64 bit" versions on Win 2003. There's the one for IA-64 (Itanium) and the one for x86-64 (just about every new processor from Intel and AMD including many of the bargain ones like Celeron.) There couldn't be a driver that works for both Itanium and AMD64, they must mean that it works with intel's x86-64 and amd's as well.

Reply: (edit)Some references may help ...in the manual for a HP ProLiant DL585 http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bc/docs/s... "When the Windows Server 2003 Editions for 64-bit Extended Systems are released, the ProLiant DL585 server will be able to directly address over 4 GB of physical memory." DL585 is not an Itanium box. Then you to go to Windows HP drivers section (FC HBAs ) you have a choice of. Microsoft Windows Server 2003 64 Bit Edition Microsoft Windows Server 2003 64 Bit for Extended Systems. in http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsuppor... I'm puzzled about the difference. Regards Jim

Reply: (edit)According to this article... http://news.zdnet.co.uk/software/0,... There was a version of Windows 2003 that was based on the opteron processor, but could not run 32 bit applications. So it looks like the first one listed on that driver page is for that version, and the second one is meant for the x86-64 version, i think. It looks pretty confusing, see what you can make from reading that article.
