Comment:

Should I install the Web Edition of Windows Server 2003 (instead of Standard Edition) because I plan on using it as a workstation and do not care for all of those extra services? Are there any IMPORTANT services that will not be installed with Web Edition (i.e. file sharing and broadband sharing)?

I also wanted to know if someone could list ALL of the unnecessary Windows 2003 services that can be disabled if I am only using it as a workstation.

(Settings „³ Control Panel „³ Administrative Tools „³ Services)

I have tried disabling some services manually, but doing so triggered some warnings upon booting-up. I do not have a top of the line CPU, so running unneeded services all the time will only suck up more system resources.

Thank You

My list, running everything beautifully:

Vital Services:

DHCP Client
Event Log
Plug and Play (if you want this)
Remote Procedure Call
Security Accounts Manager (not sure)
Windows Management Instrumentation
Workstation

********

Optional for Workstation:

Windows Audio
Themes

********

Run these if you share files over a LAN:

Server
Network Connections
Computer Browser
Distributed File System
Network Location Awareness

******

Cryptographic Services needs to be running if you want to install Directx 9.0a, and perhaps other software. Directx 9.0a is all I've needed it for though, now its disabled :)

If you have an HID service running that allows extra buttons to function on your keyboard, leave that service alone, unless you don't use the extra buttons.

****

Other than that I have everything else disabled, everything... You'll need to turn off ALL error reporting if you don't want the Volume Shadow Copy bringing up a window during startup. You can disable error reporting in the same area where you set Program Priorities and Paging File size :)

Or should I call it, System-->Advanced-->Error Reporting.

Disable error reporting, and uncheck the box that asks if you want critical errors reported.
