Comment:

We recently setup a Server 2003 box and with Active Directory etc and configured the users with Roaming Profiles. Profiles were stored on the server (eg \\Server\Profiles\jsmith) and each time they logged in it carried them across. However for several profiles in Active Directory Users & Computers we did not set a Profile Path in Properties->User Profile->Profile Path, and thus for those accounts the profiles were stored locally.

However since Folder Redirection was turned on (only for the Desktop), all accounts are being redirected to a predefined place on the server (I didn't make this change). We went back to try and revert to how it used to be (Just using the roaming profile to the server_ but the option isn't there. So we had all users being redirected to this new location.

I went into Group Policy Editor to User Config->Windows Settings->Folder Redirection->Desktop->Target and Chose the setting Basic with the Target Location (Create a folder for each user under the root path) and mapped it back to the server the way it was using Active Directory before the change, (eg \\Server\Profiles\jsmith). However now the accounts without the profile path, eg Administrators and a few others are getting folders created on the server (eg \\Server\Profiles\administrator). We don't want these created, we want the profiles used locally still as it was originally. We considered changing the Group Policy Editor User Config->Windows Settings->Folder Redirection->Desktop->Target Setting to "Advanced" but we'd have to create a whole stack of user groups etc and manage new priledge policies and so forth. Is there any way to nuke the Redirection completely so it's like it never happened and all policies it created, removed?

Many Thanks

I too have come to HATE folder redirection with a passion burning deep within. Our problem is similar... though I actually tried to setup folder redirection willingly :(

I originally setup folder redirection on each of the 4 possible choices (App Data, Desktop, My Docs, Start Menu) and I told it to revert back to the original location (i.e. local profile and/or roaming profile) upon removal of the policy.

We had chaos break lose on the network the next day as several users did not appreciate the eons it took to get logged into the network. So I pulled the plug on redirection. I turned it off and waited patiently for Windows to do as it said it would in the description and revert files back to their original location.

Well...

It's been over a week now and there are still a random 30 to 40 users that are using the redirected folders on the server instead of local/roaming profiles.

Any help or solutions anyone can post here would be GREATLY appreciated. I'll be creating a special bookmark folder just for this issue and checking the sites in it regularly.

If I find an answer at any site I'll try to spread it to all the others.

Thank you all for any help you can offer.

Naturally I found this link shortly after calming down from my rant and restructuring my Google search :)

http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/
WindowsServ/2003/standard/proddocs/en-us/Default.asp?url=/
resources/documentation/windowsserv/2003/standard/proddocs/
en-us/gpx_redirectLocalProfile.asp

I broke apart the link above into 4 lines so it would wordwrap properly. I haven't tested this yet but it involves a lot of extra work and hassle so it must be the solution we are looking for.
