Comment:

I had an old 2000 domain and I just installed a 2003 server as the first server of a new domain and had my 2000 servers join the new domain. They all joined okay except for one due to a firewall issue which I resolved. Now on this one server, whenever I add a domain user account to the NTFS permissions of a folder, it looks like it takes it but when I close the window and open it again, the domain accounts disappear everytime. As a workaround, I created local user accounts using the same username/passwords as the domain accounts and assigned the permissions to these local users and that seems to work. But I really need to find out why it is losing the domain accounts. It obviously can see the domain controller or else I would not see the accounts to be able to choose them in the first place.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

You could try removing it from the domain and rejoining it. It seems likely the problem you had joining it to the domain originally is the cause of this ongoing problem you're now having. Since you have the issue fixed that started this all off, there's a good chance that my suggestion will work.

Just remember, whatever you do, back the machine up first!

Thanks for the suggestion Curt. I was about to do that myself when I decided to do a side by side comparison of the services running on the affected server and one that was working properly.

The problem - NETBIOS over TCP/IP was disabled. When I switched the server from the private network and plugged it directly into the network to bypass the firewall so I could join the domain, I did not notice that this setting returned to the default of using NETBIOS via DHCP - our network does not use DHCP. Once I enabled NETBIOS over TCP/IP, the permissions stayed in place. Once simple little checkbox makes a big difference sometimes.
