Is there a basic 'How to guide' to set up a win2003 server hard-wired to a DSL router with 5 wireless XP clients available somewhere? With DHCP handled by the router - dishing out internet access to the server and clients; Active Directory / DC handled by the server dishing out the client authorising/logins and shared folders?

I don't want to use the server for dhcp. So has anyone written a base setup guide which can make use of the 'Manage Your Server' to add the required services, and example IP/setups for the router?

I believe this would be invaluable as many people seem to be requesting this.

This must have been asked by many small businesses/small networks with a view to future expansion henmce the win2003 AD requirement and NOT workgroup.

Anyone know if it exists or is willing to write a basic run through?

This has been asked on this forum several times. I bet if you search, you'll probably find the answer. I know I've written how to do it at least once or twice.

why nhot use the server for dhcp
turn it off on the router
install NAT /RRAS on win server
all users will get internet through 1 IP address

That would be a pretty horrible idea. If you then don't remove the router, you'll be in a double NAT configuration. If you remove the SOHO router, your server will be exposed on the internet.

I'm all for DHCP from the server, but NAT/RRAS is unneeded, can cause incompatibilities due to double NAT, or if it becomes the router, it would be a major security risk.

This would be a problem for Active Directory. IT MUST be the DNS server for the workstations. It forwards to the ISP's dns server. You can configure the router to give the correct ips with correct dns to the workstations.

You never let a server get a dhcp address. You assign a static one and exclude that address from the dhcp scope.

Give a person a fish, they eat for a day. Suggest they internet search and they learn a skill for a lifetime.

You see - a clash of ideas. Quote "I see no method..." unquote...lol

Seriously though... If I service up the win2003 server for AD and DNS, and give it a static address, the router can still be my dhcp server....yes or no?

All I want to see here is a base scenario where;

1. The server is allowing the 5 wifi XP clients access to server logins, folder/file shares and maybe access to a print server service. The server is hard wired to the router so it can also get inet access.

2. Simply put, the wifi/switch combi router to handle the rest of the internet access for the 5 wifi workstations and to act as a client pass thru to the server for access to the shared folders/files/print server service.

If I put all my clients thru the server for Inet access (ie they all share a single access point via the server) in my opinion its going to cause a bottleneck when everyone is on the internet / sharing folders/readin/writing files at the same time.

So you can see my point: I just want the router to handle clients accessing the internet.

My ISP connection provider via router is on a static IP.

Can anyone suggest a good method for what I want - I have searched this site and have not found a match.

If I could only find a good match on google or summit I wouldn't waste any one else's time - promise.

I'd have thought someone has done what I am trying to do - and it seems like a plausible method.

Any help would be greatly appreciated - and a bottle of plonk to anyone who can merely point me on the way.

Thanks guys for the comments so far. And believe me, I have searched the forums before I made my request.
