Hey - I've been having a problem with my sound card for a few weeks. No Sound. In the device manager, it says there are no conflicts and it should be running fine, but nothing. I've tried alot of things including: newest 2000 drivers, different PCI slot, Win 2000 OS repair all to no avail. I know its my sound card because when I goto Control Panel -> Sounds and Multimedia -> Hardware, I cannot choose to change the output hardware component, but the input component is selectable. I have read about this problem alot and nobody seems to have gotten it working. I have Creative Soundblaster Live! and I've tried the drivers from both the Soundblaster Live! and Soundblaster Live! Value CD's along with the drivers from Creative. ---:::Justin:::---

That sounds like a tough one. So, this is a new problem, then? That is to say, this soundcard did work with your system at one time? If so, what have you installed after the soundcard? If anything, have you disabled that (or those) device(s) to see what would happen? Do you have integrated sound that was somehow re-enabled in the BIOS? Is "Use audio feature for this device" checked in the properties in the control panel applet you addressed?

Yes, the sound card did work at one time and yes all the hardware are enabled. In the device manager, there are the Soundblaster and Legacy devices though. I've tried every possible combo of enabling and disabling them. Heres how it all started: My sound worked fine, but I used a different disk to install it and it gave me a blue screen of death on random boot ups, so I thought "I'll just reinstall it with the disc it came with" and TADA, here I am. Hrm, I'm intruiged by your BIOS statements and I'm not to familiar...please explain of that more. ---:::Justin:::---

Chances are the BIOS settings are not your problem if you never went there to try to fix the problem after the card stopped working. You may have settings for "integrated devices" in there, and I would think that disabling any called "audio" or "sound", if they exist and are enabled, would be a viable troubleshooting step.
Since the orignal disk worked in the first place, it seems to me that incompatibility or corruption of the files from the "different disk" is the likely culprit. As a last resort, I would try removing the files from that installation through brute force, if necessary. That is, uninstall the card through add/remove hardware, identify the "bad" driver file names from browsing the (blue-screening) installation disk, searching for them in Windows (they're probably in winnt\system32)and deleting them. Alternatively, you could identify the good file names, go to "Driver Details" in device manager, and then you can go after the bad ones. After that, you should try reinstalling with the first (and known good) installation disk.

Thank you SOOO much for the idea. I thought I had tried that, but I suppose I hadn't. I did I multitude of things besides that, so if anybody needs help with this same problem, email me and I'll try to walk you through what I did. Thanks again Rog.
