Word XP open as Read-only

We have Win2K computers (various MHz, memory, etc.) running Office XP. If a user has a Word doc open and tries to open another Word doc, it opens it as read-only. (The attributes are not set as read-only) It's very intermittent and it sometimes will open the first Word doc as read-only as well. We have found a workaround by having the user right click on the doc and open it that way. Anyone have any idea if this is common with Word XP or know how to alleviate this problem?
