Every time I go to create a new doc in word the letter l appears on the screen so I have to delete and then start typing how do I get this auto character to go away

Let me know how you are getting this letter. Does it happen when you ask for a NEW Doc. or just by default. Is it a template that you are opening, if it is then it is in your template.

sounds like a problem with the NORMAL.DOT template.... I suggest you replace the NORMAL template with a clean one.
