My notebook was acting a bit wonky, with the Windows Installer running 5 or so times each time I went to open certain, but not all, programs. I went to do the check where the system compares files on HD to files on CD, and that worked fine, but didn't cure the problems.

So, me thinks, I'll re-install W2K. Well, it gets partway through the installation, and the power goes out. It had gone past the point in the installation where it deletes a load of existing files, and now it won't boot from Cd or start-up disks.

No matter what I do, the error comes at the 5th line into the start - file windows\system32\config is either missing or corrupted - you can try starting the computer from the cd or start-up disks to repair this problem.

Trouble is, it won't start from them.

Any suggestions?

oh - it's a p2-233 notebook which was upgraded from 98, in case that matters.

Thanks

Boot from a windows 98 floppy.....select cd support.......then go to the i386 folder on the windows 2000 cd and type winnt.
Make sure you have a copy of smartdrv.exe on the Windows 98 floppy.....and load it after you boot up from the floppy and before you try to install Windows 2000. You start smartdrv from the a: prompt just after you boot up by typing smartdrv it wont show anything other than you wont get a bad command error but it will be running in memory when you start the windows 2000 install. If you dont load smartdrv before you try to install windows 2000 from dos it will take 4 or 5 hours or more just to copy the files from the cd......and 3 or 4 hours if you copy the i386 folder to your harddrive. You will find a copy of smartdrv on your windows 98 cd. It will be uncompressed and visable. So just copy the file from the windows 98 cd to your windows 98 boot floppy. You should be able to restart your Windows 2000 install. You may have to start over since your laptop stopped the process before it had a chance to finish.

Good luck.
