I was updating my system from the Microsoft web site and during the process my system stopped responding. I'm not sure what program was updating at the time but it was a number of hotfixes that I was installing. When I went to reboot, I got the error message "winlogon.exe has generated errors" and the system reboots going right back to the error message. I tried restoring the last known good profile but that didn't work. I can't boot in safe mode as I get the same error, none of the F8 functions work as they all give the same error. I even tried replacing the winlogon.exe file thinking it may be corrupted but that didn't work either. I'm totally dead in the water and I don't know what to do to resolve this problem. Someone please give me some guidance as to what to do. The OS is Win 2K Pro with SP2 installed.

I have just the same problem. I have uninstalled one of WindowsUpdate Qxxxx files, then reboot and..."winlogon.exe has generated errors", and reboot...reboot...
The RecoveryConsole works,I have replaced the registry files from RegBack - no results. Any idea ?
The OS is Win 2K Pro with SP2 installed.

I have the same problem exactly described by Cunnar above.
I rebooted having just installed pcAnywhere 9.0 and it now just loops around, continually rebooting.
What do I do to fix it?
I had literally just got my computer working properly again. Fresh install, all updates from Microsoft etc etc. : (: )
thanks for any help!B.
