Windows Updates while logged off

Hi,
If windows update is configured to automatically apply patches without prompting, will it work when the computer is on, but no one is logged onto it. I know when a user is logged on it says that it is downloading them and that it has to restart, but i've never seen that when there is no user logged on. If no one is logged on does it not require a restart? The reason I ask is because I would like the machines to update themselves @ night when no-one is using them. Thanks ahead of time.
