Hello, I have a windows 2000 server w/ SP2, when I click on the windows update to do the critical updates, the status meters will go like it's installing it but then it says 'the following updates were not installed'!! It's very frustrating!!

I look in the event logs and an error message is there: The description for event ID 16389 in Source (WindowsUpdateV3) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or messages DLL files to display messages from a remote computer.

Most event ID's are 16389, some are 2, and 12002.
Any help is appreciated! Please email me, thanks a million!

I would go and either do a registry repair and go that route and if not you looking at a possiable format and reinstalling windows 2000.

This might be the update that Microsoft had posted that was bad. It wouldn't work with NT 4.0...maybe it was having the same problem with W2K Server.
Good luck.

One day I tried to install critical updates for W2000 profesional and received following message, from this moment reinstallation of fresh W2000 copy neither SP1 or SP2 do not resolved this problem: I received the same message every time when I tried to update my W2000: "The description for Event ID ( 12007 ) in Source ( WindowsUpdateV3 ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. The following information is part of the event: V3_2|5083|INSTALL|Security Update, November 20, 2001|6,4,9,1121|2002-01-14 00:13:48|1|FAIL|0x80072ee7||."
Thank you in advance for good advice
