For some strange reason my MY COMPUTER, NETWORK and MY DOCUMENTS icons on the desktop show up as though there are no files associated with them. All of the other system icons (trashcan, etc.) appear as they should. Anybody got a clue?

It sounds as if the .ico file association is missing or is corrupt. See Microsoft Article #Q171325 fot the registry fix
