Windows Installer Errors

This morning I installed Norton Antivirus 2002 on my Windows 2000 computer with NTFS file system. The installation appeared to go fine, but when it finished a black window popped up, freezing my computer. Every time I rebooted, the window would pop up again. Because it appeared to be a bad installation, I went into safe mode to attempt to uninstall it.

When I began to uninstall using Add/Remove Programs I received this error:

"The Windows Installer service could not be accessed. Contact your support personnel to verify that the Windows Installer service is properly registered."

Because something seemed to be very wrong, I went to the Symantec website to find out how to repair the problems. I did find some information on what to do if Windows had problems starting up after installation, but most of it wouldn't work on Windows 2000 (like running "msconfig").

Another very odd thing that is happening (which appears to be related to the previous problem) is that whenever I try to install any program with Windows Installer, I get this message (very similar to the last):

"The Windows Installer service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in safe mode, or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance."

After a lot of work, I was able to start up Windows in normal mode, but still got the same error messages with Windows Installer. Unfortunately, Microsoft has made it impossible to uninstall it, and I cant seem to reinstall it either, as I get this error with Windows Installer 2.0 (which I assume is the version I have):

"The specified service already exists."

When I went into the Component Services settings in the Control Panel, I found the properties of Windows Installer. The properties said that Windows Installer was stopped, and when I pushed Start I got this error:

"Could not start the Windows Installer service on Local Computer. Error 1077: No attempts to start the service have been made since last boot."

Because of this, I tried switching the startup type from Manual to Automatic, but the service still remains at Stopped after startups, and I get the same errors.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The windows installer has magically been unrecognized. Go to system32 and run msiexec /regserver and the problem will go away.

Please if you can help me write me an e-mail as fast as possible. ok here's my problem with windows installer. I first installed ms-office 2000 premium without any problems but when i tried to install my cd-writer program which also uses windoes installer (roxio cd creater) i had an error window which said installer terminated prematurely. and now every program which install with windows installer doesn't want to install i always receive this error window when copying files. I think taht reinstalling windows installer would be a good way to correct the problem but i just don'T know how to do it.....i tried many solutions that i found on the internet but none works.

Ooh! ooh! I want to fix my stupid PC too! I have the same problem. What does Andy mean by "go to system32"? Is that a cmd line executable? I'm trying to find out where I enter the "msiexec /regserver" part.

Help! My system is so hosed!!!

Thanks!

just go to start - run
and type msiexec /regserver.

then press enter, and if it doesn't come back with an error you're away!

Anyone know what you do if you DO get an error ("Windows Installer Unspecified Error ") when you register the msiexec ?

PS 'Go to System 32' means you should navigate to the folder of that name in the DOS window. Do this by typing the following:
CD c:\ (Enter)
CD WINNT (Enter)
CD SYSTEM32 (Enter)

or alternatively navigate to the folder in windows explorer BEFORE you run the COMMAND or CMD statement and you should find the cursor is already at C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32

Hi, guys. I'm having the same problem.

When I try loading any Office 2000 programs I get "This application must be installed to run." And of course Windows Installer is totally gaffed so I can't reinstall Office or anything else: "The Windows Installer service can't be accessed."

I tried running these commands, as Andy had suggested but to no avail:

msiexec /unregister
msiexec /regserver

I'm really stuck and I don't feel like losing everything in a reinstallation of Windows.

Any other ideas?

Microsoft have a more long winded version of Andy's fix to recomend, which involves doing the registration in safe mode.

Details at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q315346

However, if didnt work for me. :-(

I've had these problems too. I've tried many fixes that I have found in newsgroups etc. but to no avail. I suspect my problem maybe something to do with my machine being dual boot. If anyone finds a definitive solution to fixing this service please let the world know!! A lot of people have been having these problems, and in some cases the only rememdy to the situation was to reinstall the OS!! MS need to come up with a definitive fix very soon!

I have a related problem with windows installer in W2K, after re-instating the windows installer whenever I try to install or uninstall anything I get 'Error 1324: The folder path "Documents and Settings" contactins an invalid character. I also get this message referencing the "Program Files" directory.

I've checked the folders and everything looks fine. The MS knowledgebase makes a few references to this error under other operating systems & other conditions but nothing for W2K.

Any ideas what to try next (or re-format & re-inatll as a last resort!)
