Yesterday, I came to work late when I tried to work on my computer... LO!! Windows Explorer doesn't work! When I asked, nobody could tell me who used the comp and I hadn't installed any new software for a while now. The curious thing is I can open all the software with no problems, but when I try to open My Computer, My Documents, Recycling Bin, IE, Control Panels, or any other system related program I CAN'T!!

I ran the antivirus--TWICE--but it didn't find anything. I tried to return to the last known good config but it only has one, tried to login with another user but the problem persists. I've been researching but I really wouldn't want to do anything radical cuz that's the only comp that has the agent programs for external companies that we work with.

Please help! I don't know what to do anymore! *promises to kill any soul who dares touch her comp in the future*

I am having the same exact problem as Penchy-Chan. Applications work fine and I am able to navigate to files within applications. Trying to go to Windows explorer, My computer control panel, etc. goes right back to the desktop. Norton detected the Download.trojan virus but now it can't seem to find it. Computer works fine in Safe Mode. Help anyone!!

Oh, kill me...

Now it's worse... I accidentally disabled the LAN connection and now I can't put it back on!! The error says: "The network location cannot be reached".

About what it does when I try to access Windows Explorer, it just goes back to the desktop. And the antivirus is supposedly updated. Now one of the programs doesn't work properly.

AND I DON'T HAVE INTERNET!! How can I restablish the connection if I can't access windows explorer?

I have the same exact problem too. When I click on My Computer, Recycling Binn, control panel, the bottom bar disappears briefly then reappears. I can't open any folders that way, though all my other programs (except internet explorer) work fine.

Same here - weird that it is all at the same time . . . new virus we don't know about? I've tried profile settings, re-installing, etc. - No Luck. Any thoughts out there?

I am having the same problem. It started last Thursday - April Fool's Day. Everything works fine in safe mode but can't access Windows Explorer, My Computer, My Documents, Control Panel, ect. during a normal boot. I tried running Norton Antivirus Scan and Spybot scans - Neither show anything. I reinstalled Win2000 Service Pack 4. I really DON'T want to reformat but I have been working on this for two days and not gotten anywhere. Any help would be greatly appriciated!

Thanks,
-Kim

Okay - it apparently is an April Fool's Virus that has yet to have a fix developed for it - if you feel like waiting for one . . . go ahead; if not - the only way around it is to format and re-install.

Thanks for the great tip. That fixed all of the problems. I can't believe how easy it was to fix a problem that looked so mysterious.

Dudes! Thanks for figuring this out already! I was ready to freak out (alright... I freaked out...) I was sure I hadn't done anything out of the ordinary, but when I got back from a short vacation trip, I had all the same maladies previously stated and I was like, huh? What the $%@#@?!?! This really sucks, I thought, and I spent a good two days pounding my skull, trying everything I could think of (except of course unclicking 3rd party extentions!) and finally had resolved to just living with it and deal with it, cope with the fact that my computer will never be the same again, the past glory and computing satisfaction I had experienced before would just be a fond memory and I won't be bummed out that I have to do all this extra stuff to make happen now, what only took one little click then, and yeah, yeah, this computer is my friend too, yeah, yeah, we'll be happy together soon enough, and I'll forget all about that computer Heaven that I used to exist in, cuz I can just hang with this reality and I'm down with making this HELL seem o.k. WHOA!

Hold on a sec...

I think this might have been a little stressful on my old bean, it seems...
Thanks for this space to let it all out and again thanx for the tip to fix the problem!
Off to therapy! (Yeah, right! Smoke another one!)

(I can only imagine where I'd be going if I hadn't come across this forum, saving me from certain further frustration for sure!)

Three cheers to RobotX and his trusting sidekick laxmi!! Hip Hip Harray! For he's a jolly good... Woo Hoo!

I tried the procedure recommended by RobotX but it didn't work. Every thing works fine in safe mode but nothing related to Windows Explore works in normal mode, including My Documents, Control Panel, Internet Explorer, etc.

Does anyone have any other ideas?

i tried the third party extensions, and it made no difference, so I ran the latest version of ad aware and spybot, and that seemed to solve it
