Windows Explorer Right Pane Empty!

When I'm in Windows Explorer I cannot view anything in the Right Pane. There is a tiny square located in the upper left corner of the right pane, and the square has a dot in the center of it. I found one suggested solution using Google, involving tapping the + key, but that does nothing. Also when I open the Control Panel, there is a square with a red x in the right pane, as though there is a missing image file somewhere. Are these two problems related? Is there any hope? This is our main MISSION CRITICAL server, so it's difficult to experiment on.
Presumably you are certain you used the + key on the far right of the "numeric keypad", just above Enter key?

Yes, that is exactly the article I found, and exactly what I tried, with no help. The article says that this problem occurs when Windows Explorer is set to "Details" view, but I don't show anything regardless of which view type is selected.
Sure would be nice to figure out why.

I am having the same problem with my Windows 2000 Server. It may be related to recent software uninstalls but I am not certain, just grasping at straws at this point. Please let me know if any more info surfaces on this topic.
