Windows Explorer disappears

each time I right click "Start"; left click "Explore"; I find myself at the "Start" folder in the tree of folders/drives;etc.; upon the next click ....anywhere on the screen...... everything disappears without further ado. Do not have a clue as to how to remedy this, but want to be able to move folder and files around; etc. and fully explore the contents of my computer. Any help would be soreley appreciated.
