Hi,

I have changed a computer on a windows 2000 network (all PCs are win2k) due to a power supply blowout.

The network worked perfectly before but now I am getting Network path not found error messages on the other PCs. On the new PC I can ping to the others ok. I have looked at netbios over TCIP and other setting but I am really stumped, I know it is all set up ok with static IP addresses and the remainder of the network talks to each other ok but this one has been shut out. In my network places if it shows the other PC it says network path cannot be found.

I am convinced it is a simple problem but I am totally stumped, how can I make it all refresh itself, its all down to a new PC being put in place of the old one. It is annoying as I can ping out from the new one to the others but my network places won't have it. The new pc can not see the others in my network places although it can ping and if I do a search it can find them. The old PCs can see the new one but the path is invalid.

The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available is another aggro message I get from the machines but I am starting to get lost as to what I have and have not done now.

So:
4 PCs working great, 1 blows power supply
replaced with new case & MBoard for good measure
assigned same static IP address.
3 untouched PCs work great
new one can't get onto the network via my network places but can ping so I can get round it with map network drive but its not ideal and gives me backup headaches.
all running windows 2000 pro.
Workgroup is same default name on all of them
running 3com lan modem.. and all machines can get onto net & email

any suggestions? I sort of get the feeling I need them to all refresh themselves somehow or forget that the old PC was there and say hello mate to the new one but they don't seem to be in a friendly mood!

many thanks,

Kev

Does the new machine have the same NETBIOS name, IP Address, shares, and share permissions as the old one?

Have you done the Network Identification Wizard on the New Computer? What type of network are you running? Do you have Client For Microsoft Networks Installed? You said that you are getting a Network Path Not Found error. Was the netowrork path in question pointing to the missing computer? Is there anything in your login script that is still trying to connect to the old computer? To reset the network paths you have to manualy delete them, then restart your computer and let the loging script remap them (if it is setup that way) or else you need to manualy remap them.

Hi,

thanks for getting back to me.

The new PC has the same netbios names.
Tried network ID wizard, several times, and I have client for MS newtorks installed.

Have deleted users, re added users for the machines, the new one can see can see the others via ping but not in my network places.

In a nutshell it is identical to blown machine bar new MBoard and maybe the lan card is in a different slot but bar that its the same.
XP 2400, 256 MB ram, Win 200 pro, office xp. Other machines are same but with 1.3 ghz processors.
Just done another test and it definitely just this PC is the problem (as others can see each other no probs), how would I manually reset the network paths as I am geting a gut feeling this is the problem.

I tried to duplicate the problem on a test home network but could only get it to work again via auto asign IPs and changing network workgroup name to workgroup1.

I ams looking into regedit of browser and changing \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Browser\Parameters\maintainserver list to disabled on all machines then back to auto one by one but if 3 are ok and one is a problem this is starting to feel a bit extreme.

kind rgds
Kevin
