Hi. I recently downloaded an old win 3.1 game called Jezzball and went to play it. When I go to run I get this msg:
"C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'close' to terminate this application."
I understand that my o/s runs on 32 bit, and these games are 16, but I heard of a utility "WinG" that helps overcome this problem. When I downloaded this program, it again gave me the same msg when I tried to run its setup file. Any ideas, suggestions or is this impossible to overcome.

You may need an emulator like VirtualPC, DOSBOX etcetc try a Google:

Or else read this article it is biased towards NT4 but NT5 (W2K)is similar, as W3.x is only a shell for MSDOS:

Sorry, my mail server refuses to send you the message I notify in the previous post. That solves your troubles, it gives you Autoexec.NT and Config.NT, the 16 bits initialization files.

If you are still interested I'll mail you from another PC, but you need to be patient.

Ivo,

Thanks for your help. I don't exactly understand what you we're to send me but whenever you are able to that would be great.

To workaround the mail server failure and get the fix now, follow the instructions below:

1) Paste into NotePad the following three lines of code and save the resulting file as Autoexec.NT into C:\Windows\System32 or (C:\WinNT\System32)

Lh %SystemRoot%\system32\mscdexnt.exe
Lh %SystemRoot%\system32\redir
Lh %SystemRoot%\system32\dosx

2) As above but naming the file Config.NT

dos=high, umb
device=%SystemRoot%\system32\himem.sys
files=40

Now you should be ready to play. Otherwise post again.

Hello Kris,

did you save the sent (or created by yourself) Autoexec.NT and Config.NT files?

If yes, do you suffer the same error message (unlucky) or anything else?

Report exactly which error/warning now you get.

Is this something that appcompat.exe could get around?
