This problem is similar to many I have read about, but the fixes mentioned didn't work. I am in a dorm attempting to get onto the dorm workgroup so that I can exchange files. The problem is, when I go into the "Computers near me" folder, only a few of the multitude of folks show up. The ones that do are running previous Windows versions, and ME. Also, I can access shared files if I type in \\name\ in the Run box in the start menu. I would like to get a listing of the computers in this workgroup though. My computer shares fine, and I have netbeui enables. Also, I have netbios enabled. I obtain my IP address from a dhcp server, as does everyone else. What can I do to solve this problem?
Also, there was a message regarding the long wait after opening the network places directory, but no helpful info, apparently it has to do with Win 2k looking for tasks or some such thing. I did a trick I found and that didn't help.
Thanks in advance,
Rob.

Are you using Client for Microsoft Networks?
Make sure you have the correct Workgroup name. Here is a registry fix to speed up access to
shares, it might be the same one you already
tried, but it worked for me.
When Win2K attempts to browse shares on a Windows Me or Win9x machine, it also checks for scheduled tasks that are enabled on the
machine. Disabling this check speeds the browsing. Perform the following steps:1. Start regedit.exe.
2. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\RemoteComputer\NameSpace.
3. Right-click {D6277990-4C6A-11CF-8D87-00AA0060F5BF}, and select Delete.
4. Click Yes to the confirmation.
5. Close regedit.

find someone on your floor, that you can't see their computer!! and see if they can see you!!! If they can see you then heck it's you that is the problem!!! Check to see if you need a default gateway installed. Also, try to ping them, their IP (remember this is the one that can't see you) If you can ping them then it is definitely your computer with something up...again check to see if you need a gateway. If they cna't see you, then problem is you might be alright. The thing with win2k is that when you boot up it loads all network connections. this means, it gathers all domains, workgroups etc...that are running off of the same DHCP server. You could have 99 domains listed and 99 workgroups listed (for example). anyways try the other guys computer, and see if he can see you. Make sure you can't see him though otherwise this does nothing. That's a start. we have to get rid of certain variables before we can identify the real problem

No, I can access the shares that I can not see. Therefore, the connection is all good. I am using client... ms networks. The computers that do show up on my screen have properties of being Windows 95 servers. Whether this indicates that They run Windows 95 or just use protocals associated with, I do not know. The workgroup name is correct, otherwise I would see nobody.
That registry hack is the one I used, and it didn't help. Booo. The real problem is that I can't access the shares.
When I say that I can contact the shares, I mean that I can do start, run, \\share\
and browse from there.Thanks again.
Robert.

Also, they can see me and access my shares, and I do not know what a default gateway is, although I know where the setting for it is located.

Every domain or workgroup has a Master Browser.
This computer keeps a list of all the shared
resources in the network. Other computers on the
network get this list from the Master Browser.
It could be that your computer has a problem
accessing this Master Browser. There is a way you
can make your computer the Master Browser
whenever you are logged on.Use regedit - go to
Hkey local machine
Current Control set
Services
Browser
Parameters
Click on Is Domain Master and change the entry
from false to true.I'm not sure it will fix your problem, but
it's worth a try.
