Hi, I basically have 3 computers networked together in my house to share files and printers. They all have Windows 2000 Professional running in the same Workgroup. On one computer, everytime I want to access the other two it always asks me to enter the username and password of that computer. After I enter the username and password then it's fine until I reboot/log off the computer then it will asks me to enter them again if I want to access. This does not happen on the other two computers. All I do is double on the computer I want to access the shared files and I'm in. Surprisingly, the computer that always requires me to enter username/password is logged in as "Administrator". I even tried to log in as somebody else but that does not fix the problem. Not a big issue but just annoying that I have to enter username/password for that computer I want to access all the time. Please help me out. Thank you.

That is the difference between a domain and a workgroup!
You have 3 PC's, I assume you have 3 users. Each user must have their User Name and Password set up on EVERY computer.
In a Domain, the Server would grant permission. With your P2P network, all permissions MUST be kept on each machine.

exactly right. you admin account password is different between machines which is why you are asked for a password.
Don't logon as administrator for regular usage. Too easy to screw to much up under that account hence the recommendation from MS.
Golly gee wilerkers everyone. Learn to Internet Search

.... got a similar problem but only one notebook w 2kpro ... itwont let me past the admin log-on buso ... I wanted to reformat the dual partition HDD anyway, cause i got someone buying it who wants either 2kpro or xp installed, so I'm not too worried. any clues on best way to do it....from memory wen i did it once b4 i had to use an 98se bootdiisk with generic cd drivers & fdisk installed so i could bootup from floppy, get a c: prompt, format & ???? after that....Ive got a bunch of 2kpro start up disks wot I think i got from bootdisk.com & I installed 98se from cd then upgraded to 2kpro...any quicker way & where do i get the 98se reformat etc disk i had & can't find? s--- this is complicated!! sorry tri, not much use to u but i need memory jog here!!

Hi guys, thanks for the info but I just want to confirm. So basically to fix my problem I just have to set the password under username "Administrator" to be identical on all computers correct?
Also I got one more question for you guys. Lately my brother bought another computer and it's running Windows XP Home Edition. I tried to make him join the workgroup but his computer can't see anybody. Is that an XP Home Edition problem? Should I use XP Pro instead? or maybe I should get Windows 2000 Pro also just to match the rest. Because from what I know, XP does not have all the options like 2000 Pro where you can add all the username in the workgroup and set them to certain rights. Or maybe I'm just not knowing what I'm doing here. Please help me out. Thanks a bunch.

NO, NEVER use the Administrator login!
Say you have 2 computers and 2 users that you want networked, I'll use mine as an example.
Workgroup = "Crandall" on BOTH machines.
2 users set up EXACTLY the same on BOTH machines.
UserID: Marty PW: 1234
UserID: Candy PW: 5678Once it's done like that, the network will recognize my wifes login if she attempts to browse files on my computer. WHY? Her UserID that she signed into her machine with is EXACTLY the same as the one on my PC and my machine already knows her.

As far as your brothers machine, NO XP Pro is totally unnecessary.
XP Home will do almost anything that 2kPro will do except the ability to join a Domain, which you do NOT have. XP (Home or Pro) is just too much of a gas hog for most of us.
Now that you have 3 PC's, back to basics:
1. Make certain all necessary services are installed on EACH machine. "TCP\IP, Client for M$ Networks and File and Print Sharing for M$ Networks"
2. Make certain EACH computer is part of the same "Workgroup".
3. EACH computer must now have 3 identical users set up (4 if you count the Administrator).
Administrator Passords do NOT have to be the same on each machine, but the User ID's and Passwords MUST be the same.
