Windows 2000 won't start properly

Windows 2000 Professional decided to die on me today... noticed the winlogon.exe process was running extremely high and I was unable to shut the system down properly. Doing a reset on it, the software registry file was damaged however it was repaired.
When 2000 starts, it hangs on "Windows is starting up...." but moves on to Setting up your network config. Eventually my background picture does appear but that's the farthest I got.
Any suggestion before I go and reinstall everything (again)?
