Comment:

When I go to Start, Shutdown, my computer says "It is now safe to shut off your computer."

On other Windows 2000 computers that I have used (all at my job), they do not not show this message, they shut off automatically.

Why doesn't my computer automatically shut off?

Open:

Control Panel >> Power Options >> APM tab

enable APM

Test, does it shut off properly now?

I assume you must be using an ATX PSU with a machine of that spec, so that shouldn't be a problem.

Check in device manager under "Computer" - if it says "Standard PC" then this is the reason. Windows 2000 needs to be installed on an ACPI enabled BIOS (it will detect this and in device manager, would say "ACPI Compliant PC" or similar under "Computer")

Maybe ACPI isn't enabled in your BIOS setup? If not, I would not recommend enabling it unless you plan to reinstall Windows, although I understand it can be done, and I'm sure someone else around here would know how.
