Windows 2000 Server Domain Controller can be run in two modes: mixed mode or native mode.
When running in mixed mode, which is the default, Windows 2000 Server acts just like a Windows NT domain controller, and you can have Windows NT running as BDC to the 2000 box.
When running in native mode, which you can promote from the mixed mode, that means the whole network has switched to a pure Windows 2000 domain envirnomnet, and in that case, there's no longer BDC.

But isn't the Windows 2000 Server domain structure different from the Windows NT domain structure? This specific Windows 2000 Server uses AD that does not exist in Windows NT. In that case there cannot be a Windows NT BDC to the Windows 2000 Server, right? At least that's what i think... Please reply.

Yes, NT domains are flat, unlike Windows 2000 domains.
In mixed mode, the AD replicates SAM and other down level information using an internal PDC emulator. This makes it possible to incorporate NT BDC servers into a Windows 2000 domain.
Microsoft made sure their new servers were backward compatible...better sales u c.
