Hi All,
I am experiencing strange problems with my Windows 2000 Server machine. Maybe someone here can help me out. Thanks in advance!
For the past few weeks it has been randomly restarting. I would check event viewer and the message would say the shutdown was unexpected. No other errors. I never quite knew what the problem was, but it didn't happen too often.
Now the computer is acting up even more. Basically, when I login to the machine, after the desktop icons load, the computer will restart. If I login to safe mode, it will still restart after the icons load.
I am only able to login to the safe mode COMMAND PROMPT.
If I boot the computer normal and leave it at the login window, everything will run fine in the background. The sites will remain up and running, etc...
However, after a certain amount of time, ranging from minutes to days the computer will suddenly seem to turn off, but the power remains on. It does not reply to pings and the monitor will show no input, but you can still hear the computer humming. I have to hold the power button down to turn it off.
This is a web server. It isn't used as a workstation at all. It has the latest patches, anti-virus, and firewall protection.
The cpu temp is at 45 degrees celcius. Not too low, but I don't think its high enough to cause these problems. Can anyone confirm this?
Could anyone recommend some things to do at the safe mode command prompt? Thanks.

Some common reasons for this is (a) power supply problems or (b) trojans or spyware.
You can check out your power supply, and you can run a full virus scan and also get AdAware (see below).
I'd also clean up the computer -- too many temp files can cause instability (also see below).
Okay, here's my little maintenance checklist:
-- Delete all temp files (c:\windows\temp\*.tmp, or on XP C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp)
-- Delete temporary internet files (c:\windows\temporary internet files\*.*, or on XP C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files)
-- If you use I.E., click on Tools, Internet Options, Delete Files, select "delete all off-line content", click OK
-- Click on Start, Programs, Accessories, Systems Tools, Disk Cleanup
-- Download AdAware ( http://www.lavasoft.de ), check for updates, run it and remove whatever it finds
-- Download Diskeeper ( http://www.executive.com ) defrag
-- Download, update and turn on SpywareBlaster ( http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html) and SpywareGuard ( http://www.wilderssecurity.net/spywareguard.html ).

Hi Guys,
Sorry for the delay in response. It took a while to do all that, then I monitored the server for a couple weeks.
Here's the deal. I did EVERYTHING mentioned above. I even purchased a brand new power supply (its a bad ass supply and the server was due anyway). I made sure to run a fresh virus scan on it with F-Prot anti-virus. I downloaded AdAware and SpyBlaster. System was pretty clean besides cookies and one search bar. I cleared all temp files. I also ran a Scan Disk, and Defragged.
The good news: The computer is no longer freezing after login. I have full access, and it runs fairly well now.
The bad news: Eventually after the server stays up, It will just stop responding and go blank. It won't wake up, and it won't reply to pings. The server essentually acts as if the power is off, but it is not. The power supply fan is still going in back. I have to turn off the computer by holding down the power button, then it boots up fine again. This problem can happen over a range of days, or sometimes a week or two.
Any idea what would cause this after I have made all those adjustments? Thanks!
