I have a strange and so far impossible reboot situation that I've been unable to remedy with Windows 2000. Recently I was using my thinkpad laptop, running SP2, and lots of software, and I was using a file sharing service to grab some music. At some point that file sharing service was not responding so I shut it down with the task manager. At that point internet explorer shut itself down saying that it had encountered errors and that an error log had been generated. I had seen this symptom before on a couple of Dell desktops, and I knew that if I rebooted, the system would never start up. I also couldn't get IE to load due to the error. The system had been running flawlessly with the same software for months. When I reboot, windows 2000 says that services.exe has encountered problems and will cause windows 2000 to reboot. It says that this was authorized by NT\System. The system then times out after a countdown of like 50 seconds and reboots. I have tried all of the recovery options, last known good, even reinstalling the system over the corrupted one, and still the error message is consistent. It also locks me out of safe mode. I just can't figure out which file has been corrupted here, and I know that the file sharing programs don't load into the services control panel at startup, and I have also been locked out of safe mode. I can obviously boot the recovery console to dos, but I'm not sure of which files to yank, perhaps services.exe, and svchost.exe, but I'm not sure that replacing them will make a difference. I also tried deleting the event log files, because I had seen that someone had this sort of problem caused by corrupted event logs, so I deleted them through the dos recovery console, and they regenerated, but I still have the problem. Any help would be appreciated, I really don't want to reformat, even though I've got all of my files off of the machine.

How are you able to get into the system? Do ANY of the F8 options let you in? And what do you mean it "locks you out"?
You say you tried reinstalling the OS over the existing one... did you REinstall your web browser and that file sharing service? I think that service program is your key. Try fixing it and see what happens. And if you haven't gotten rid of your Event Logs, and can still get to them, see if there is any info in them that might help. Might start a new post with some more info, as well as what you've tried....

hi EVERYBODY,

I also faced the same problem of svchost.exe and service.exe....in almost all application like IE 5.5 ,OUTLOOK EXPRESS,REAL PLAYER,WIN AMP...ETC .I tried the all option present in f8 and even i tried to reinstall and repair the os w2k prof.. but during setup also i got the svchost.exe error.Even i tried with installation of SP2.

Later on i reinstalled the os with clean format and restored my all data with backup..then it started working fine ....but now i started facing strange problem about internet connection from the same system....i am not able to browse any sites but my outlook express 5 mail client is working without any trouble. If any body knows the solution or want to discuss with me ..pls free to mail me.

Regards,
Mahesh
