Well, with the information you gave, all I can suggest is to get more ram and defrag.

That should be enough horsepower for 2000. Do you check for Spyware/Adware/Viruses? Do you have a lot of programs srunning automatically at startup? Do you have sufficient free hard drive space for the Windows swap file? More information is helpful.
