Hi there,
I just put together my new computer and installed a new clean install from format of Windows 2000. Imediately after installing everything seems fine, then after a few reboots, the sound cuts out right after the startup music. (Actually during... it plays then quickly cuts off, then I try to play any wav files and get no sound at all) Also, after this happens, the video becomes chopy in games, and cutscenes. I have tried a clean install 3 times in the past day, all with the same problem.
The system is as follows. All the parts were in my old computer, except I wanted a new video card, so the Video card and the Mother board are new (got motherboard as the old one was not AGP version 2 compliant):
-slot1 Pentium 3 - 600 Mhz (100Mhz x 6)
-2x128Meg Dimms, plus 1x64meg. All micron.
-New, Tyan Trinity 400 motherboard
-New, Vision Tek Xtasy 6454 (Geforce 3 Ti 200)(AGP)
-Diamond Monster Sound MX-300 (Vortex2)(PCI)
-Real Tek 100/10Base T ethernet adapter
-USRobotics Sportster 33.6k modem
-HP 8100i Burner
-Panasonic DVD-113 drive.
-26.5 Gig Maxtor HDD
-Floppy
-Stock HP Case and Power supply.Software:
-Windows 2000 Professional
-(tried Windows update the first time and applied all the pathes and updates, still the same problem as now)
-Applied the Via 4in1 dirvers this time
-Tried NVidia 23.11 and 27.50 drivers
-The only thing on top of these drivers and OS I have installed this time around are AVX anti-virus (which was not in all times the problem has repeated) Winzip 8.1 and thats it.
The last time I had Ghost Recon and Half life in and they were how I found that the video problems surfaced when the sound cut out.I noticed possible resource (IRQ) conflicts and so I tried removing the ACPI with Standard PC last time. Which set everything on its own IRQs. It seemed to be OK after reboot, but once getting into ghost recon, in the menus it was fine, but once in the real game, the sound cut out and the video got choppy again.
..... Please help... I am utterly confussed..... All the hardward worked fine on the old P2BVT (HP Harrier) motherboard, (with the exception of the video card which was not compatible) However with the old geforce one card and the HP board, the system had no problems....

I'm not sure what this ACPI thing is you said you modified, but it didn't work, and so you should put it back how it was before trying this, because I have the same motherboard TYAN s1854 trinity 400 (awesome), and this worked for me, without messing with ACPI.
This may sound too simple, and you may have tried it already, but try this:
Reset your BIOS to the defaults by pulling jumper 2 (JP2) off and then putting it back on (while the system is off).
Startup win2k.
Uninstall then physically remove all optional cards -- sound, ethernet, modem...
COMPLETELY REMOVE THEM.
Bootup win2k.
Uninstall video card.
(don't take it out of the machine, obviously).
reboot win2k
install video card drivers.
shut down.
reinstall the optional cards *one by one*, physically, and then in windows.
By one by one, I mean, put the first card in, bootup, install drivers, shut down.
repeat.
Once they're all installed, they SHOULD have been designated proper IRQs.
If all is working ok, go through your BIOS settings and put everything else how you want it... like memory speed etc.

1.BIOS flash perhaps
2.Start all over with HD format, the whole bit.
3.Bring up in minimal configuration. If you can grab a different cd-rom. just what is necessary.
4.install your 4-in-1 drivers, then sound, then video, most current.
5.any luck yet in games?? if its good, add 1 device at a time, until it craps out (if it does).
6.Consider Microsoft updates.
7.All this is assuming all of your equipment is compatible with win2k, etc, etc.Eric, CCNA, A+, Net+, APS
