Hi. I bought this computer (Dell) from a friend a few weeks ago. It came with 2000 Pro on it, but it got a virus and now isnt working right. I bought XP for dell and I want to uninstall 2000 and fresh install XP. I dont have the 2000 disks, and I keep reading about a floppy boot disk, but I dont have a floppy drive. Is this something I can do without screwing it all up? I have no clue where to begin.

Christine:

I suggest you copy off any files you need to a CD, DVD, or network (but preferably a removable media.) Copy only files that you absolutely need as they may contain the virus.

During the XP install you have the option of deleting/creating partitions and formatting the drive.

Boot from the XP CD, during the install delete the old partition(s) create a new partition and then continue with the install of XP. This will completely remove all traces of Windows 2000 and a virus.

Before restoring any files you may have copied off. Install/update your virus scanner and force it to scan all files on the media you backed up the files to.
