Subject: Windows 2000 Printer sharing
Comment:

I have a shared printer setup on a Windows 2000 server. I am using the "Additional Drivers" option on the sharing tab to setup a driver for another Windows operating system to use this shared printer. I check the Intel Windows NT 4.0 or 2000 option - and click O.K. Another screen comes up and reads

"The file *.inf on the Windows 2000 server CD-ROM is needed. Type the path where the file is located, and then click O.K."

In the path field is D:\printers\NT4\i386. (1) I don't know what specific file is needed because it says *.inf and (2) when I look on the Windows 2000 server CD-ROM in the printers\NT4\i386 folder, there are no .inf files. I go ahead and click on O.K. choosing the default path of printers\NT4\i386 and get another screen that comes up and reads

"Please insert the Compact Disc labeled Windows 2000 Server CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive and then click O.K.
You can also click O.K.if you want files to be copied from an alternate location, such as a floppy disk or a network server."

I click O.K. to continue and get another screen that comes up and reads

"The printer driver you selected is either not compatible with your current version of windows, or it may not be available.
Select a compatible driver from the list or contact your administrator for help."

My only option is to click O.K. When I click O.K. the screen goes away and puts me back at the additional drivers screen.

I have tried this with many different models of HP printers and chose Windows NT 4.0 or 2000 and/or Windows 95 or 98. I get the same results each time. I looked up the following message on Microsoft's Web site
"The printer driver you selected is either not compatible with your current version of windows, or it may not be available.
Select a compatible driver from the list or contact your administrator for help."

I found article Q318577 which referenced article Q263090. Article Q263090 is good - but it just says to do what I am already doing and can't get to work. Article Q318577 refers to "the printer's .inf file." Again there is no specific file name and I don't know exactly what file(s) to use.

I also tried downloading drivers from HP's web site and trying the .inf files contained in those drivers. I could not find anything that worked.

Please let me know exactly how to make a shared printer, on a Windows 2000 server, available to Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 9x workstations. Everything reads that it is possible but I can't get it to work. I've spent a lot of time on this and am not sure where to go from here.

Are you sure you're putting the Windows 2000 SERVER disk in? There are 35 .inf files in the printers\NT4\i386 directory. They start with BROTHER.inf and end with XPRO610.inf.
??

And you say you do not have 35 .INF files in the printers\NT4\i386 directory on the CD?

Win2k will automatically push the correct driver down when a workstation connects to a NW printer but unfortunately this only applies to a Win2K client. The only reason the Additional Drivers option is there is so that the driver can be pushed to the 98 clients, too but if for whatever reason you can't do it this way, I would just load the driver locally onto the 98 machines, then try to install the NW printer...
