It appears that collated output from Win2000 only works printers with LPT port destinations. The only workaround that I'm aware of is to capture LPT ports for network printers.
It is not related specifically to Novell queues.
You will note that jobs sent to FILE: and copied to the printer exhibit the same problem.
Jobs sent to an SMB queue (Microsoft Networking/samba) exhibit the same problem.
Dov from Adobe hinted that printers which use USB interfaces experience the same problem.
A discussion with someone from Adobe on their semi-public forum led me to believe that the problem is with the Win2000 spooler.
It is among the problems with delay our Win2000 rollout. As you are probably aware, Win9x behaves as expected.
I suppose the reason why MS hasn't fixed this, and I can't confirm this without a Win2000 server, is that the local printer driver isn't used for an SMB queue that points to a Win2000 server.
Other potential solutions:
Some printers may have defective drivers which you can fix. Example: HP 4100 PS.
We have an HP LaserJet 4100 which did not collate or correctly select Manual Feed for MS-Word labels. One can modify the PPD to correct both these problems. Note that you may need a RAM upgrade to support device support collation on the HP 4100. Grab 128MB from Kingston.
- The Manual Feed/Tray selection problem appears in most newer HP PostScript drivers, but can be fixed by editing the PPD - compare with the HP 5 PS PPD file and see how the OpenUI ManualFeed is described.
- The Collate problem on the HP 4100 can be fixed by editing the PPD and changing references to HPCollate to Collate.
