I have a two computer network that was running win98 and I upgraded the host to Win 2000 and now when I try to access the shared files on the host from the other computer it asked for a password and I don't know what it would be, I had them set up without passwords on win98 and don't know what it wants or where to change it in win 2000

You can log in with one of your log in passwords for the host machine. If you want, you can set up a new use account. Right click on "my computer" and select manage. Expand System tools then expand local users and groups. Highlight the users window. From the action menu up top, select new user. The rest should be self explanitory.

i have a problem with file sharing also..
the problem is the password prompted by w2k is not the original name that i set it.
For example, i set the computer name for w2k pc as com7, but when i click the com7 from network neighbourhood, it prompted me a password and the pc name for com7 change to
\\com7\ipc$..how would i entered the password for this?

My problem is that when I am on the computer running win 98 it prompts me to enter a password to access the drives on the host machine(running win 2000) and I have not set any, so I need to know where I can set (in win 2000) the drive to be accessed with no password, or a password the I can set it too.

In Windows 2000, file sharing permissions are done via the guest account. Normally the guest account is disabled for good reasons.
Right Click on My Computer -> Manage -> Local Users & Groups and you'll see the guest account. Enable it and it should work. Notice "SHOULD" with Microsoft products you cant be 100% :)

Ok, for all of the questions above. Go to the Windows 2000 machine. Create a user account that matches that used on your Windows 98 machines (name AND password). Then go to the folder you want to share and share it, and under Permissions assign the correct access rights to the user account you just created.
Now when you try to access that share from a Windows 98 machine it will see that you have the rights to access it.
And for those of you getting the IPC$ share, you CANNOT access that share, create your own....

Enabling the guest account will be 10X easier. the only thing u have to worry about is security issues. If you want to assign permissions then i suggest doing what Lucid suggests, but if u want everyone to have access to a share folder just enable the guest account.

Thanks for the above messages, I too could not get it to work. But do now thanks to the kind folks who replyed.

I'm having problems with logging onto my Win2k machine on my dad's WinME machine. When he tries to access my computer he gets a "No permission to access resource" I've tried all of the aforementioned fixes and none of them worked.
