I found a solution to a problem in an old post, that was similar to my problem, but was never resolved. Here goes:
My MSI or Windows installer was corrupt from the moment I installed Windows 2000. MS Office install crashed before completing, other programs wouldn't even start installing.
Well, Eureka! After intense headache...(going through registry, deleting MSI keys, ect... still getting "The specified service already exists" even though I removed every single MSI key!!!!!! Argh..
Here's what I did that worked.
-Reboot
-When the first loader screen comes up(the MS-DOS-like loader screen), press F8 (you'll see when to)
-Select "Safe Mode with Command Prompt"
-Wait FOREVER AND A DAY........
-When the prompt finally comes up type in "cd\winnt\system32" and press enter
-type in "del msi.dll". press enter.
-Now, reboot! This should have caused mass havok and MSI should be gone. Now what you do is download the InstMsiW.exe from:http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=4B6140F9-2D36-4977-8FA1-6F8A0F5DCA8F
(If this link doesn't work do a search for "MSI Redistributable 2.0" or something like that and you should be able to find the download)
if you haven't already. Run it, and it will work.
-Feel the pressure on your skull back off from 100 PSI. Ahh.
