Comment: This post is more to gather information about a product rather than a tech support question. The question for everyone is how reliable to people find W2K Backup which comes bundled with Windows 2000 Server when backing up to tape? Backing up to disk seems great but to tape appears to be a nightmare. I work as a maintenance technician and a lot of my time at the moment is spent looking at W2K Backup failures and it is driving me mad. I'm at the point now where i am considering changing our backup strategy to move away from W2K Backup and move to a proper piece of backup software such as Backup Exec. Does anyone have a strategy for backing up to tape using W2K Backup which is foolproof? Everybodies comments will be much appreciated.

Reply: (edit)Hello Ian, Your post is timely- I recently made a reply posting covering this very topic. No, using the NTBackup utility with tapes is not reliable at all. Read my post for more details: http://www.computing.net/windows2000/wwwboard/forum/51221.html In short; 1. With tapes, in my experiance either Backup Exec, or Tapeware as a more inexpensive option, is the best way to go. Or, 2. Use NTBackup to backup to external Firewire hard drives.
