I am running Windows 98 and I am getting an error message poping up every few seconds. The message reads, Windows Socket Error [10049], on API connect. At the top of the error box in the blue title bar is WinUpd32. I found some articles that said this could be due to a virus so I updated my Norton virus SW and found a Sub Seven virus that I cleaned up. This atricle also said to look for an entry in the Win.ini and System.ini for Wincmp32.exe which I did not have. I also checked the register and there was nothing there either. None of this has helped with the problem. Does anyone know how to correct this??? Thanks!

I think you can fix this problem by simply removing and reinstalling again the TCP/IP protocol in the network properties (Start --> Control Panel --> Network).

Hope this helps!

OMG what a mess that was.. But thanks to someone else with the problem its fixed. I started getting this error from somewhere who knows where but I read somewhere to look for a sysctls.exe on my computer and I found it.. the message said to just delete it but when I deleted it the problem was still there the message would pop up every few seconds changing the message error from windows socket error 10049 api connect to windows socket error 10001 api async lookup. anyone with these error messages must do the following it is the only fix that I can see.. I searched the web for 5 hours last night and found a post on here that fixed it.. go to: http://www.typebyte.com/mountain.html when you get there scroll to the bottom of the page.. there is a thing called trojan remover click it and go to downloads on the page. its free for trial but after 30 days its 24.99 but atleast get the trial and follow the instructions when run it.. it did fix my problem after about 10 minutes.. thanks so much to whom ever posted the message.. believe me it does work.
