I Have W2K on a Tyan 1854 mb, 256 mb pc133, piii-450,20 gb Maxtor HD,SB Live, ATI Rage 128, 2 LAN Cards, PCI modem, Hauppauge TV-PCI card, Yamaha CDRW-8424. All hardware works fine. Unit starts and shuts down fine. Can not place unit into Standby mode. I get an error message that says "The device driver for the 'Generic volume' device is preventing the machine from entering standby. Please close all applications and try again.... I close all running applications under task manager. I also stopped all un-necessary services and I still get this message. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance

I'm running a AMD-K6-2 450, on 128MB PC-100 RAM, with a SB128 PCI (which incidentally doesn't work properly without drivers!) and a Matrox Millennium G200 8MB SD. My computer goes into standby fine... but hey, it doesn't come out again!

The GENERIC VOLUME is the IOMEGA ZIP100 drive and I have the same problem, at least on my machine.
I know i'm not of much help but i'm trying.
Maybe we should contact IOMEGA.

I have the same problem with my system. Errors with suspend and hibernate are usually caused by a not fully-ACPI-compliant BIOS. Upgrading the BIOS usually resolves this issue. It did for me.
About the ZIP-drive:
If the ZIPdrive is an external one install the patch from MS ( www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downloads/recommended/q251381/default.asp ) Then install IOmegaware 2.2.1 ( www.iomega.com/software/featured/windows2000.html ) If the ZIP-drive is an internal one only use the IOmegaware 2.2.1 not the MS patch.

Hope this helps.
Lennard

I have a Dell Latitude CPiR with the same problem. No zip or other external drives. I have 3 "Generic Volume" devices, which matches the number of partitions on my HD.

I had the same problem entering Hibernation with IBM Thinkpad 600E / Windows 2000 Prof.

Tho I beleive I solved it below but any suggestion for what "generic volume" is? So to prevent future problem.

Solution:

1. Removed software:

a. Adaptec "Take Two" CDRW backup.
b. Starfish "True Sync" for Motorola L-series GSM mobile phones.

Because they were the major changes to the system before the problem.

I took your advice and uninstalled Adaptec Take Two. Now the keyboard device is preventing the system from entiring hybernation mode. One problem to the next.

I have a Gateway SOLO 9300 laptop and Win2k. I have the same error, caused by the keyboard device. Hmmm... No Zip drives or Take Two software...

I am experiencing the same problem with my Dell Inspiron 7500. I am going to notify Roxio of this problem. It appears there is a conflict between Take Two and Windows 2000.

Here is the response from Roxio:

"Hello from Roxio!

I am responding to your email concerning suspend mode in 2000 not functioning when our software is installed. This is a known issue with our software in Windows 2000. The 1.03e update for take two has been known to fix this issue for most people. You can obtain this update from
http://www.roxio.com/en/jhtml/support/webcheckup.jhtml. We are aware, however, that it has not fixed the issue for everyone and are currently working on another fix. When it is available it should be posted on our
website. We do apologize for the inconvenience.

Thank you for using Roxio's online support!"

Sounds like some similarities here. The base system shipped to me was a Dell 420 workstation, Windows 2000, 2 x Pentium III 833Mhz, 526Meg Ram, one SCSI hard drive, internal 250meg ZipDrive.

I did not have this problem, of failing to enter standby or hibernate, until AFTER I added an IOMEGA CDRW drive and installed the Direct CD and Take Two software. Even after I uninstalled them, I had the same problem. Reported to Roxio who responded with same message as Reply #10 above.

I have also tried installing every available updated driver from Microsoft, including SP1, and this has not addressed the problem. It appears Take Two or Direct CD changed something in Windows 2000 that is not corrected when the software in uninstalled. Since I am unwilling to go through the pain of a reinstall of W2K, I wont know if reinstalling W2K would solve the problem. Waiting to hear from Roxio when the fix is completed

Same Problem, standby working fine on Thinkpad T20 until installing Iomega USB ZipCDR/RW and associated Adaptec burning software. Have unistalled and reinstalled all software, downloaded adaptec updates and still no luck. This really STINKS!!! - I lived on Standby!!! I hope we find a sulution soon. I'm about ready to reload 2000. I have also re-ran the W2K setup, and also SP1. Still no luck.

I wish we new what registry key was checked before putting the machine in standby???

Tolli

The version of Take Two bundled with Easy CD Creator 5.0 does not cause this problem.

The uninstall of Take-2 and DirectCD solved this problem on my Dell Lattitude CPi with Win2000 SP2.

Gotta love them software developers!
