Windows 2000 will not boot after moving to another pc, using both Norton Ghost, as well as physically moving the hard drive. Windows 2000 hangs at the monochrome screen that says "starting windows..." before the "splash" screen. Cannot boot into safe mode either. have removed all hardware in the device manager, as well as telling windows 2000 to just use generic VGA/IDE drivers, all to no avail. Has anyone else seen this problem? All of the hardware has worked before with windows 2000 (had another win2k installation on the pc at first). This has happened to at least 2 pcs where I work. Thanks.

Try this: boot to the recovery console. when you are prompted to hit F6 to load Mass storage drivers hit f5 instead. This will allow you to load a different HAL. Choose the generic PC option. This should get you in where you can then install the correct one.

the 2 pcs are near identical, minor hardware differences. same nic, different motherboard, same agp card. this has happened twice so far, normally when we clone pcs, we have to set the ide controller to use a generic driver, so that win2k wont give the stop error inacessbile_boot_device. this is driving us crazy trying to figure out what the problem is.
