Hi everyone,
I am trying to Peer-to-Peer network (using a crossover cable. No hub) a Win2k machine to a win98 machine and despite my valiant attempts I have had no success. I receive the following error message every time. "Cannot find file or item ‘\\villa\’. Make sure that the path and file name are correct".
Please note that 'villa' is the name of the win98 machine, and that exactly the same error message appears if I use the win98 machine to try to connect to the win2k machine (with a different computer name of course). Both machines are able to locate and send packets to them selves using the dos ping prompt.
The purpose of this network is to file share and play games so a IPX/SPX and TCP/IP protocol are required and net BIOS is on.
If anyone at all can assist in successfully networking these two machines via a crossover cable then I would rely appreciate it.

Try assigning a private static IP to both PC's and try again, but don't connect using computer names, connect using IP addresses like \\192.168.1.1\share_name Generally in a P2P home network, the use of 2 NIC's is advised. One for Public (Internet) access, and one for Private P2P networks. See if that helps.

Both are excellent 'how to ' sites for LAN (basic upwards); both deal with crossover and hub etc. approaches.
Perhaps have a browse of either/both to gain cleer step-by-step instructions?

To Trvlr and Jinx,
I have managed to sus the problem...I installed win2000 in place of 98 on the other machine and brought a new adapter card.
lol, not quite what I had in mind but I has done the job.Ta for your inputs.
