OS: Win 2k Pro SP4
CPU/Ram: AMD Athlon 1.3ghz/ 512DDR
Comment:

I'm running Windows 2k Pro, and am getting total system lockups when running graphic heavy programs or playing audio/video files in WMP9. Here's a rundown of the observations I've made and my system specs.

Complete system lockups, no keyboard functionality. Hard reset required to continue.
- Locks up when playing Star Wars Galaxies (random times)
- Locks up when playing music or video using WMP9 (random)
- Locks up when using Yahoo Java Chat with voice enabled (random)
- Does NOT lock up when WMP is playing and minimzed, but locks up when clicked from Start Bar

When playing video in WMP9, framerate slows down before system locks. Gets slower and slower until it stops altogether.
- All devices working correctly, according to hardware manager.
- All devices updated to current driver versions.
- Windows updated to current version
- Hard drive formatted numerous times
- Internet connection not required for lockup
- CPU usage rises to 100% when running applications, possible bad CPU?
- CPU fan and heat sink removed and cleaned, fan works properly
- Memory seated correctly, possibly bad memory chip?

Have you defragmented your disk lately? Also, check the size of your page file. It should be one and a half times that of your memory. You could increase it a bit more.

Could be Zone Alarm. Try disabling it and see if the problems still happen. I've been having somewhat related problems and ZoneAlarm was the culprit.
